Romeo and Juliet – My Treatement of Scenes 1.3 and 1.5

Setting

This tragic love story takes place on a spaceship called New Britannia roaming the galaxy. Within New Britannia is the city known as Civitas Sana (Healthy City in Latin). The city was once a bustling hub full of people and travelers from throughout the solar system, but then it was cut off from travelers due to an outbreak of disease.  The city had taken precautions for the healthy citizens and created multiple quarantined areas for the sick. The city split in two parts. One part is for the healthy and rich, and the other is for the sick and poor.  Among the rich, were an elite and powerful family known as the Capulet’s. They were a family known for their medical prestige and had control over all the pharmaceutical manufacturing on the entire ship, and controlled many of the quarantines and hospitals in the city. Those who were sick were known as Montague’s and felt resentment toward the Capulet’s.

Time Period

The time period is 2135 where humanity had spread across the galaxy.

House of Capulet

A well-known rich family who controlled the manufacturing of medicines and owned many of the hospitals and quarantines in the city, which looked down on the Montague’s as scum. The gain from the publicity of “caring for the ill” was well known throughout their quadrant of space, but in truth they hated the Montague’s because of the fear that they felt. The Capulet’s have been living a disease-free life and are repulsed at the thought of touching a Montague.  So because of this fear, the Capulet’s don’t necessarily treat the Montague’s but instead, they stabilize them with drugs and keep them in place to support the upper echelon of society.

Juliet

The 19 year old daughter of the Capulet’s whose dreams are to become a certified nurse rather than to follow in their parent’s footsteps of being in business. Juliet often studies in secret and hopes to cure all of the Montague’s, rather than to profit off of them. She can be described as a thin, petite girl with long dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. Although she may seem vulnerable due to her being under constant supervision, Juliet is quite sneaky and clever when she wants to be.

House of Montague

The House of Montague was a family of business traders, travelling to the far parts of the galaxy, trading their products.  They were the first family to contract the deadly diseases and were the first to be quarantined.  However that did not work, the spread of the disease did not remained contained, it jumped from family to family. Now the entire sick population is known as the “House of Montague”. For years now, the House of Montague has felt imprisoned by the Capulet’s and have created a small group of people that will carry out a rebellion against the House of Capulet.

Romeo

The 23 year old leader of the small Montague rebellion force. He is ambitious, brave, and has a manipulative mind. Romeo suffered from the disease but miraculously cured himself and now supports the House of Montague. Romeo is often described as tall and charming, with a pair of hazel eyes, along with wavy, thick, dark brown hair. Romeo always carries a weapon and is very cautious toward Capulet’s. He often goes unrecognized among Capulet’s and uses that to his advantage.

THE PLAY

Prolouge

A mother lying next to her daughter’s hospital bed, softly cooing the last sentence of the story.  Once she finishes, the daughter starts pleading for the mother to tell the famous and tragic love story of their home land once more.

Mother

All right, love. But only once more alright? Long ago in this very ship, their stood two very different people. A powerful family that stood over almost all the people who shaped our world with their wealth and greed. And the other, a large group of people that grew very ill over time. The rich and powerful family hated the ill and locked them up in one part of the city, like animals. Why do they hate them? That’s a very good question, love. Hate is the off spring off fear as your grandmother once said. You see, No one wants to admit they are afraid all the time, so they transformed it into hate. Alright, Alright, I’ll get to your favorite part. In these two groups, two people fell in love. Yes, you guessed it, their love didn’t end well.

ACT 1, SCENE 3

[Capulet house. LADY CAPULET & NURSE]

Lady Capulet

Nurse, where’s my daughter? Ring her up to me.

Nurse

What a stubborn quine at 19 years ol’!

Dear lord! Where’s this lass?! Juliet!

Juliet

[enters]

Why is everyone shouting? It is so bloody loud!

Nurse

Your mum wants to speak with you. Play nice alrigh’

Juliet

Ma, I’m here. I heard you the first time!

Lady Capulet

This is a private matter, We must talk alone. Ah bloody he–Nurse, come back please!

I just remembered, Nurse stay here. You can tell me that we are ready for the ceremony.

Nurse

Alrigh’ me lady

Lady Capulet

She’s of age already, my how time can go so quickly.

Nurse

Well of course she’s at the consenting age of 19!

How long is it until the Ceremony?

Lady Capulet

Not soon enough , still just in a couple of weeks.

Nurse

Oh my! God Bless! It is that special time!

She shall finally follow in her fathers footsteps! She will finally take charge of her life,

And take o’er the family business!

From the moment I was to take care of young Juliet, I have seen her grow into a young lady!

And now she is 19! In the blink of an eye! I can just see it now!

Fair Juliet will keep us all safe!

Dear God—

Lady Capulet

Oh stop it! Will yeh be quiet Nurse?!

Nurse

Yes, madam, My apologies. I cant help but think that she also would be a good doctor!

Juliet

Nurse! I told you not to talk about that out loud!

Nurse

Oh but Juliet! My dear, you are the smartest young lady I have ever taught!

It has been a true honor! Seeing you study late at night! But, taking o’er the family business is just a dream come true for your family—

 Lady Capulet

What is this nonsense about becoming a doctor?! Anyhow, let us talk about a more important matter!

My darling, you will be taking over the family business and makin’ your parents proud! You will be talked about all over the galaxy!

 Juliet

What?! I am nothing like you or father! I don’t want the publicity! I want to start treating the Montagues in the quarantines–

Nurse

Nothin’ like? Have you lost your marbles my dear? And what’s this talk about Montagues?

My dear lady Capulet! It seems as if Juliet’s mind has been filled with toxins!

Lady Capulet

Juliet, think of our city! Think of our friends who depend on us! Your father and I will not live forever. I was younger than you when I met your father and look at how successful we are! Here in Civitas Sana, us higher class ladies don’t need to involve ourselves with Montague. Your father and I will have none of that thinking. Your destiny was already defined when you were born.

Nurse

It’s a wonderful thing, Juliet! Don’t be selfish.

Lady Capulet

Now child, go get yourself ready, This evening we shall commemorate Juliet taking over the family business! Can you picture yourself , surrounded by what you deserve, my dear?

Lady Capulet

Can you think of anything greater?

Juliet

I won’t fancy taking over this business as much as you’d like me to Mum. I am not like
you and father, I want to help the Monta–

[Music plays]
[Guest  dance]

[ROMEO, MERCUTIO & BENVOLIO enter in masks
[Romeo discusses ways of attacking while gazing at all the people]

Romeo

[his eyes fall upon Juliet who is unenthusiastically talking to guests; to a Servant]

Err, who is that young lady with the long dark brown hair?

Servant

Sorry Sir, I ain’t sure. I came by this job today! Oi! Antony! where yer want to set up the dishes?!

[servant leaves and accidently knocks off Romeo’s mask]

Romeo

[ignores the servant and gazes intently at Juliet]

Who is this mystery girl? Through all me encounters, she’s truly the most ravishing.

Tybalt

[aside]

Hm, what young geezer standin’ their like an idiot… From da looks of it, I’d say that man is a Montague.

How dare ‘e come in’er our ‘ome with ‘is disease an’ scum! Those scanners must be broken or something, I must get rid of ‘im an’ kill ‘im now!

[starts to go]

Capulet

Why, hello there nephew! Where are you going at this time of night? And with such a serious face on too!  The party has only begun!

Tybalt

Uncle, that geezer there is a Montague! Don’t be fooled by ‘is ‘ealthy lookin’ skin! He is plagued just like the rest of ‘is kind! ‘e’s probably come ter’  spread ‘is sick disgustin’ disease ! Those pricey machines aint worth anything if they don’t stop the vermins from comin’ in.

Capulet

Ah, I know that young man. Romeo if I recall from a rather rude meeting  at the manufacturing firm last week.

Tybalt

Yes. The leader of the Montague rebellion! He’s come ter’ ‘ave revenge!

Capulet

Calm down, you’re speaking too loud. We  must not be heard talking like this Tybalt. We must be well-behaved and we must keep our kind reputation. Now, that Montague doesn’t seem to be doing any harm now, and by the looks of it he doesn’t seem ill. In fact, he shouldn’t be ill if he passed through screening. Let’s not disrespect others in my house nor in front of my guests.   Take that frown off your face and entertain the guests. But tell the guards to keep a watchful eye on that man, if anything happens they can handle it, that sound fair?

Tybalt

But ‘e’s a Montague. Scum is scum, no matter what form! I shall not be polite ter that man!

Capulet

Tybalt! Obey my orders now!

Am I head of this family for just my good looks?!

No! Now go!

Tybalt

But Uncle!

Capulet

My how ignorant you have become!

By a single word, I can send you to the very quarantines these Montagues are from!

Will you be happy then?!

Don’t make a seen and obey my orders—

[to dancing Guests] My how fantastic you all look tonight!

 [to Tybalt]

Now be quiet or—

[to Servants] Carry out those plates will you?
[to Tybalt]
I’ll send you to suffer with those Montagues.
[going to dancing Guests]  Isn’t this party just lovely?

Tybalt

Such a fool uncle is sometimes. I’ll just ‘ave ter wai’ until the time is right.

Romeo

[Walking up to Juliet, taking Juliet's hand]

Me fair lady, I have stood afar and admired your beauty.

What is your name?

I will regret it for the rest of  my days if I don’t know who you are.

Juliet

[ blushes, but regains composure]

Let go of my hand or I’ll have to call security.

Romeo

[ lets go of her hand]
Please, I didn’t come here to make you nervous. I am just regular guy who has just seen the greatest beauty on this old ship.

Juliet

[hesitates to answer but then replies curiously]

I see, I’m Juliet.

I didn’t quite catch you name…?

Romeo

The name’s Romeo. Just a humble tradesmen.

Juliet

So you are one of those tradesmen, who my father believes is causing all the problems in the city?

Romeo

Well, the truth is–

Nurse

Juliet, yer Ma’ wants ter speak with you.

Juliet

Right, tell her I ‘ll be there in a bit. It was nice meeting you, Romeo.  I look
forward to seeing you again.

[ smiles, bows, and leaves]

Romeo

[to Nurse]
Who is her mother exactly?

 Nurse

My, my! What ‘ole ‘ave you crawled out of?!

That sir, is Lady Capulet!

I’m er’ daughter’s nurse!

But I tell you, you can only win that family over wi’ money an’ publici’y. Nothin’ less.

[leaves]

Romeo

So, she’s a Capulet? No, that can’t be.

Benvolio

Romeo, its time ter go! People are ge’in’ suspicious! We’ll think of another way to check out what they are doin’ at the factories. Hurry!

Romeo

Yeh, your right. We should go.

[Romeo and Benvolio leave]

Capulet

Can I have everyones attention please!

We have all gathered here today to celebrate the new successor of the Capulet’s franchise!

It is time that I pass the torch to a most capable person,

Once she officially takes over, you will be in the more than capable hands of my daughter, Juliet!

[ clapping erupts from the crowd]

Thank you, Thank you!

Juliet

[ rolls eyes at Lord Capulet and turns to Nurse]
Um, Nurse. I have to ask you something. Who was that young man you just talked to?

 Nurse

The ‘eir of the Tibero company of course! Your father’s been tryin’ to get a deal wi’ ‘im for ages!

Juliet

No,I mean that person who just walked out.

Nurse

Why are you so curious about who comes in an’ strolls out?

Juliet

Well, no reason in particular.I just didn’t recognize him. He just looked suspicious. I thought I knew everyone who comes to father’s parties.  Do you know which family he came from?

Nurse

Nope, but I’ll go ask some lads about im’.

[departs shortly]

Nurse

[returns while breathing heavily]

His name is Romeo, an’ a Montague at that,
He’s the leader of the Montague’s rebellion army! Why is ‘e ‘ere anyway?!

Juliet

[ blushes but at the same time is confused]

The leader of the rebellion force? How did he manage to get through screening? Also,
why do I feel these sudden feelings?

[Lady Capulet calls out for Juliet]

Nurse

We’re coming, We’re coming! Come on Juliet, you must be speakin’ nonsense because of ‘ow tired you are! Look at ‘ow pale your face is! Hurry along now.

[They exit]
